Attention Sponsors in Edmonton,

We would like to share with you information about a research project focused on the experiences of private sponsors and privately sponsored newcomers in the City of Edmonton.  The findings of the research will be included in the 2023 report to City Council on the State of Immigration and Settlement in Edmonton.

We have been requested to share the information below with private sponsorship groups in Edmonton. If you are a Group of Five or a Community Sponsor in Edmonton and would like to take part in this research, or if you have any questions about the research project, please read the information below and contact the team that will be conducting the research.

Dear Sponsor

The City of Edmonton has identified Private Sponsorship as one of two themes for the 2023 report to City Council on the State of Immigration and Settlement in Edmonton. Zenobia Jamal and Dr. Tania Kajner have been contracted to conduct research on the topic.

Focus groups
We would like to invite you to participate in an online focus group on your experiences as a Sponsor and on the strengths and challenges of the Private Sponsorship program.

We have scheduled focus groups on the following dates:
Focus Group 1 for Community Sponsors: Jun 7, 7-8 pm
OR
Focus Group 2 for Community Sponsors: Jun 15, 7-8 pm
Focus Group 1 for Groups of Five Sponsors: Jun 5, 7-8 pm
OR
Focus Group 2 for Groups of Five Sponsors: Jun 13, 7-8 pm
To participate, please select one focus group to attend and email your selection to Zenobia Jamal at zenobia at zenev.ca<mailto:zenobia at zemev.ca>.

Once you confirm your attendance, we will share a Zoom link for the focus group.

Interview
If you would rather not participate in a focus group and would prefer a confidential interview, we will follow up with you to schedule the interview.

Questions
In the focus group or interview, we will ask you about:

  1.  Challenges or gaps in the Private Sponsorship program, and the impacts of gaps
  2.  Changes or supports that would help address any challenges or gaps
  3.  Actions the City of Edmonton could take to support sponsored refugees and improve the Private Sponsorship program.
Confidentiality
We will keep your name and your feedback confidential. Only a summary of results will be shared in the research report.
