Presenting the Subjects of Family Abuse and Parenting to Newcomers in Orientation

Mark Jacot of Jangles Productions (Toronto) and Donna Joyette of Joyette Consulting (Mississauga) will be conducting a free training session on how to effectively present the sensitive subjects of Family Abuse and Parenting in Canada to newcomers in orientation in the Greater Vancouver Area on Tuesday, February 13, and Wednesday February 14, 2018 at the Accent Inn Hotel in Burnaby.

There will be two identical sessions each day:
# 1/#3 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and #2/ #4 - 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm

The training is open to those in the settlement field especially orientation facilitators, along with those working in related sectors (i.e. - ESL Teachers, Victim Services, Social Workers, Police, etc.).

The training will provide information on the subjects, offer guidance and direction, and introduce a recently produced newcomer orientation video on the subject of Family Abuse called "Welcome to the True North Strong and Free". The video is a significant additional resource as it provides a non-threatening intermediary approach in presenting the topic of Family Abuse in newcomer orientation.

The session will explore the following:

  * The different forms of family abuse
  * The causes and prevalence of abuse
  * How to respond to reactions and disclosures regarding abuse
  * The launch of the orientation video on family abuse and the accompanying Facilitator's Guide
  * Parenting practices and possible adjustments after coming to Canada
  * Child protection laws, legal definition of physical discipline and alternate forms of discipline
