The Refugee Sponsorship Training Program (RSTP) is offering a free workshop on Supporting Settlement and Integration of Privately Sponsored Refugees in Berwick, Nova Scotia on January 28 (storm date February 4).


The workshop is designed for both experienced sponsors, as well as sponsors new to private refugee sponsorship. Settlement support staff who work with privately sponsored newcomers are also very welcome to attend. Sponsors of all stages are welcome and invited to attend, including sponsors waiting for the arrival of the family they have sponsored, as well as sponsors nearing the end of their sponsorship period.



Please feel very welcome to advertise widely to any sponsors or settlement staff in the region that you are in contact with who may be interested in attending.

Description: RSTP invites new and experienced sponsors, volunteers and support staff to attend a free Refugee Sponsorship Training Program (RSTP) workshop reviewing the following themes of post-arrival settlement and integration matters:


• An overview of Canada’s refugee resettlement programs, including private sponsorship


• Settlement challenges and best practices: Approaches to plan for the successful settlement support of sponsored newcomers, including preparing for the end of sponsorship.


• Ethical considerations in sponsorship: Understanding the role of sponsors in the sponsorship-newcomer relationship, and how power balances can be minimized.


• Managing expectations: What expectations do sponsors and newcomers have of each other, and how can expectations be managed to avoid potential conflict, and facilitate successful sponsorship and post-sponsorship?
